Federal Sword Belt Buckle With Keeper - Water Find

SOLD

Item: Federal Sword Belt Buckle with Keeper - Water Find.
Construction: Cast brass plate with integral tongue and eagle motif with an applied nickel-silver wreath.
Condition: Fair. Its overall brass has aged into a mottled brown-green patina and has remnants of the typical surface build-up and deterioration that often accompanies water recovered relics. The front shows a spread-wing eagle clutching arrows in its left talon and an olive branch in its right talon. The majority of the applied wreath is present with a few holes and a couple of small bottom sections missing. The rear retains its belt attachment hook and the keeper is present. The buckle's bench number, if any, typically stamped in the rear is not visible, however, it could be covered by surface build-up. Both belt loop bars show water deterioration mentioned above. The buckle still has a nice body curve with no cracks, repairs, major bends, or breaks (other than the wreath).
Recovered: Off the South Carolina coast.
Reference:  A similar example of this plate can be found in "American Military Belt Plates" by O'Donnell and Campbell on page 400 as plate 663.
Approximate size: 55 x 86 mm.
Comments:  This water recovered sword waist belt plate will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War buckle, plate, or general relic collection.
