Construction: Convex, two-piece.
Approximate size: 15 mm.
Condition: Good, excavated, shank missing. This button has an overall brown patina, with areas of green build-up, and moderate ground action. The backmark is visible. It has no pushes, cracks, or repairs.
Recovered: Charlestown, WV area.

Comments: This Voltigeurs cuff button will be an excellent addition to any excavated Mexican War button, Civil War button, or general relic collection.
Additional information:
According to "Uniform Buttons of the United States 1776-1865" by Warren K. Tice, on page 139, "Congress authorized the Regiment of Voltigeurs and Riflemen during the Mexican War to specialize in mountain warfare. The Voltigeur rifle companies were supported by a rocket and howitzer battery. The term Voltigeurs was taken from the French "voltiger", meaning to leap or tumble. The Voltigeurs disbanded at the close of the Mexican War but their buttons are occasionally found at Civil War sites. Some collectors believe that they were issued to Virginia troops from old stores."
