Backmark: Blank
Design: Georgia state coat of arms is on a plain field. (see more on the Georgia state coat of arms under Comments section below) 
Construction: Convex, two-piece.
Approximate size: 23 mm.
Condition: Very good, excavated, secure shank present. The front has ample gilt highlighting the state seal's pillars, ribbons, rim and rays with a mild push to the center. No cracks, breaks, or repairs.
Recovered: Richmond, VA area.
Reference: Tice: GA230B1 Albert: GA 11
Comments: According to "Uniform Buttons of the United States 1776-1865" by Warren K. Tice, these buttons were probably made by C. Rouyer of New Orleans, LA. and, regarding the button design,

"The (Georgia) legislature adopted Georgia’s state seal in 1799. Military buttons of the state depict the seal’s obverse, or coat of arms side with the three classical pillars supporting an arch bearing the word “Constitution.” The design symbolizes the legislative, judicial, and executive departments of government supporting the constitution. Banners inscribed “Wisdom,” “Justice,” and “Moderation” are wrapped on the pillars. At the side of one pillar a militiaman stands with a drawn sword, signifying defense of the constitution by state military forces." 

This button will be an excellent addition to any Civil War button or general relic collection.
