Comments: According to "Uniform Buttons American Armed Forces 1784 - 1948", by David F. Johnson, published in 1948, on page 184:

"The use of the Log Cabin emblem evolved out of a disparaging remark made by the opposition on the lowly birth of the circumstance of the Whig candidate. To be born in a log cabin was unthinkable for a President, or so they thought, but Democracy was riding high in the saddle when Harrison was elected. Ever since that time a Presidential candidate to have been born in a cabin represented a most important asset and several men of lowly births thus ushered into the world reached the White House as Presidents.

When the nominating committee came to Harrison's home, "North Bend" (which was not the log cabin used as the emblem but which happened to be a substantial farmhouse and which was referred to as a mansion when it was destroyed by fire, August 25, 1858), a barrel of cider was tapped to serve as refreshment and to celebrate the event and so impressed these politicians that they adopted the barrel as a campaign emblem. There were objections to this hard-cider angle, of course, and the opposition made effective opposition propaganda out of it for who signed the pledge, buttons were made an worn without depicting the barrel."

This pre-Civil War Harrison campaign coat button will be an excellent addition to any excavated general relic collection.
