Iron Snap Hook with Ring

This excavated iron snap hook with ring, for use with Civil War link straps and drum slings, is in its raw, "as dug" condition. Its surface is minimally pitted but otherwise in very good solid shape. Its overall length is approximately 4 inches. The snap hook, without ring, measures approximately 2-7/8 inches in length. Ring exterior diameter measures approximately 1-11/16 inches. It has no cracks, breaks, bends, or repairs, and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War campsite, battlefield, or general relic collection.

Reference: A brass example of a snap hook is pictured in:

  • "The Hammond Civil War Collection" by Mike O'Donnell & Howard Crouch, page 56 & with same hook also appearing on page 184. The description of the snap hook pictured on page 56 states that its use was "for securing a Rebel horseman's reins".
