Iron knuckles were some of the last resorts for soldiers fighting literally "hand to hand". They are from a collection that was primarily of items recovered from the Gettysburg, PA area, though I cannot definitely say they were recovered from Gettysburg. Their condition is rusty but mostly stable with some flaking of iron. They measure approximately 2-1/2 x 4-1/4 inches. Other similar examples of knuckles can be found in "Civil War Artifacts" by Howard Crouch on page 144, items 1 & 2 and also in "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War Supplement One" by Stanley S. Phillips on page 185 as items 1 & 3. These excavated iron knuckles will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War weapon or general relic collection.
