This Jeff Davis hat insignia is in good condition, is constructed of thin stamped sheet brass and once adorned the left side of the US government issue 1858 pattern black felt hats often referred to as "Hardee Hats". Recovered along Front Royal Road in Winchester, VA., these hat pins were actually used to hold up the left-side brim of the hat, to the hat. The brass has aged into a chocolate brown patina and shows an eagle clutching three arrows in its left talon and an olive branch in its right. The rear wire attachment loops are missing and there are a couple of small breaks and a tiny crack at the top and side edge between the 12:30 to 2 o'çlock position. This Jeff Davis hat insignia, while solid, has minor bending from wear and tear, no repairs, and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War insignia or general relic collection.
