This Jeff Davis hat insignia is in very good solid condition, is constructed of thin stamped sheet brass and once adorned the left side of the US Government issue 1858 pattern black felt hats often referred to as "Hardee Hats". Recovered from Port Hudson, LA these hat pins were actually used to hold up the left-side hat brim. The brass has aged into a dusty light-purple patina and displays an eagle clutching three arrows in its left talon and an olive branch in its right. The rear wire attachment loops are missing though there is a remnant of solder remaining. The top portion of the device has a moderate forward bend likely from period use otherwise it has no cracks, breaks, or repairs. It will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War insignia or general relic collection.
