This chunk of wood has a large lead projectile lodged inside as shown in the images. The type of projectile is unknown as there are no identifying rings or view of the base, however the weight of the entire relic is approximately 2 ounces. The old fragile wood portion has little density and is lightweight. It measures approximately 3 x 2-1/2 x 1 inch. That portion of the projectile that can be measured is 1-inch in diameter. Given the weight of the projectile, along with the feel of the wood, my best guess is this is a distorted .69 or larger caliber bullet or round ball. The wood has a tendency to flake and should be handled with care. There are no repairs. It was recovered from a Civil War site in the area of the Seven Days Battles which were a series of battles occurring June 25 to July 1, 1862, near Richmond, Virginia.
