Mansfield and Lamb Cavalry Saber

This Model 1860 light cavalry saber dated 1864 was manufactured by partners Henry Mansfield and Estus Lamb in Forestdale, Rhode Island. Issued to Federal horsemen during the last year of the American Civil War, this is one of 37,508 edged weapons produced for the U.S. Ordnance Department by the firm during the war.

The guard, grip, pommel and blade are all firmly attached to each other. The center-swell handle grips have the leather wrap cover which is in good condition. Its original twist brass wire is no longer present with the exception of a small strand at the top of the handle, just below the pommel. Its original buff leather washer is present. Both brass guard and pommel have a dull brass patina with darker areas mixed in but primarily on the blade side of the guard. Its overall length measures approximately 41 inches. Its blade length measures approximately 35 inches with a blade width of 1-1/16-inch. Its curved blade has a pleasing light and dark grey sheen with no nicks.

Marked on the ricasso is “U.S. / 1864” with "1864" barely visible and the inspector's initials not present, and typically found between the letters "US" and the date. The reverse ricasso is marked “MANSFIELD & LAMB / FORESTDALE R. I.” with nearly every letter visible. The letter "M" of “MANSFIELD” and letters "FOR" of "FORESTDALE" are only partially visible likely due to a weak stamping. Its brass two branch guard and knucklebow is in good shape with no unusual bending. Its domed brass pommel cap is present with one side stamped with a “W” and the other side stamped with inspector Charles E. Wilson's initials "CEW".

This finely crafted Mansfield & Lamb light cavalry saber will be an excellent addition to any Civil War edged weapon or general relic collection.
