Comments: According to "Uniform Buttons of the United States 1776-1865" by Warren K. Tice on page 321, "These buttons were made chiefly for the efficient volunteer militia, starting around 1840. Massachusetts military authorities prescribed the pattern in dress regulations of 1852:
Gilt, of pattern as follows: convex with plain border, large size, seven-eights of an inch in exterior diameter; device upon the convex part, for Major Generals, the Massachusetts arms and the word Massachusetts; for other officers, the crest of the arms, and the words Mass. Vol. Militia. Small size one half inch."
Regulations allowed enlisted men to wear the same arms buttons as "other officers"."
This example will be an excellent addition to any Civil War button or general relic collection.
