Militia Panel Plate Waist Belt Buckle 1850-1865

SOLD

Item: Militia Panel Plate Waist Belt Buckle 1850-1865
Design: The front shows a spread wing eagle clutching arrows in its right talons with an olive branch in its left talons. The eagle is surrounded by a border of 13 stars with a laurel wreath with patriotic shield across the bottom.
Construction: Die-struck tin with applied tongue and belt loop.
Condition: Excellent, non-excavated, missing tangs. The plate has a very pleasing brown patina with areas of remaining gilt. The detail on the front of the plate is good however, there is wear on the high relief areas of the eagle exposing some of the original surface. The rear retains its tongue and belt attachment bar, but its two tangs are missing. There are no cracks, breaks, bends or repairs.
Approximate size: 57 x 85 mm.
Reference: A similar, but not exact, example of this militia panel plate is pictured in:

  • "American Military Belt Plates" by Michael J. O'Donnell and J. Duncan Campbell, on page 256, plate 403.

See above pages in additional images.

Comments: This militia panel buckle will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War buckle, plate or general relic collection.
