This incomplete Model 1859 "Jeb Stuart" detachable sword hanger is a rare find. Recovered in Orange County, VA and acquired directly from the digger, this relic is marked with the letters ""US". An example of this sword hanger can be found in Howard Crouch's "Civil War Artifacts" on page 195, items #7 & 8. Crouch writes, "The Model 1859 detachable saber hanger device designed and patented by then US cavalry officer Jeb Stuart. The two slots took leather straps." Another example can be found in in "Excavated Artifacts From Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War 1861-1865 Supplement I" by Stanley S. Phillips on page 132 as item #3. This one has a nice chocolate patina and is clearly marked with the script letters "US". Though this piece is incomplete, they are difficult to come by and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War sword or general relic collection.
