This solid cast brass US cavalry spur with cast-in groove is in very good condition and has a very nice chocolate brown patina. According to Howard Crouch, author of "Historic American Spurs", "About ten percent of those Model 1859 found will be this variety, having a cast-in groove on the inner heel band. This was done to strengthen and lighten the spur." It is complete with the exception of its iron rowel and does have a slight scratch of perhaps a digger's tool on the edge of the heel band near its neck. This spur was excavated just outside of Namozine Church in Amelia County, VA. Click on the preceding Namozine Church link to read about this battle. It has no cracks, breaks, repairs or unusual bends and this very nice spur will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War cavalry or general relic collection. Approximately 3 3/8 x 4 3/4 inches. SOLD
