US Model 1861 Rifle Musket Lock

This excavated US Model 1861 rifle musket lock was recovered from Antietam, MD area. It is constructed of iron with the hammer frozen in the cocked position as found. The iron is in its "as recovered" state as it does not appear to have been treated, however it is stable. It measures approximately 5-1/2 inches in length and is 2-3/4 inches in height. Several mechanism parts on the rear side are visible.

Reference: Examples of US model 1861 rifle musket locks are found in the following Civil War relic reference books:

  • "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War" by Stanley S. Phillips on page 175, items 5 & 12.
  • "Civil War Artifacts" by Howard R. Crouch on page 84.

See the above pages in the additional images.

This musket lock was acquired directly from the digger and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War firearm or general relic collection.
