Item: National Home Disabled Solders & Veterans Coat Button - Post War
Backmark: "STEELE & JOHNSON / (WATERBURY. CT )" dm
Construction: Convex, two-piece.
Approximate size: 23 mm.
Condition: Good, excavated, secure shank present. This very solid button is covered with gilt. There is a significant push to the left of center front but otherwise no cracks, breaks, or repairs.
Recovered: Unknown
Comments: A home was established in Washington, DC to house aging or disable Civil War veterans who could not otherwise provide for themselves. Being former soldiers, they were given uniforms to use on ceremonial occasions. This button will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War button or general relic collection.
