Item: Excavated New York militia belt plate.
Construction: Cast brass with integral tongue. The front has raised old English script letters "NY" with a sprig of laurel leaves to either side.
Condition: Very good, excavated. The plate has a brown patina with dull yellow undertones and a moderately pitted surface. There is a slight body curve and the plate is fully intact with no cracks, breaks, bends, or repairs.
Recovered: Savannah, GA
Approximate size: 48 x 91 mm.
Comments: The appearance of this buckle leads me to believe that it was a water find. An example of this plate is pictured in the second edition of O'Donnell and Campbell's "American Military Belt Plates", on page 403 as plate 668. An image of a portion of this page is included in the additional images in this listing. Also included is an image of NY corporal wearing a similar buckle. This militia belt plate will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
