Item: North Carolina State Seal Coat Button - Non-Excavated
Backmark: Blank channel.
Design: According to "Uniform Buttons of the United States 1776-1865" by Warren K. Tice, “The North Carolina seal and coat of arms depict the female figures of "Liberty" and "Plenty". The former holds a liberty pole with her right hand and a scroll inscribed "CONSTITUTION" with her left. "Plenty" grasps a cornucopia in her left hand and wheat with her right."
Construction: Convex, two-piece.
Approximate size: 23 mm.
Condition: Excellent, non-excavated, secure shank present. Yellow brassy patina with strong letters of "NORTH CAROLINA" and good detail of the state seal visible. A manufacturing flaw is found on the rear where approximately one-third of the rim fold is missing, however the button is still very solid. The flaw is more evidence of typical Confederate crudely manufactured war products. There are no pushes, cracks, or repairs.
Reference: Tice: NC210D2 Albert: NC 8
Comments: This particular classification of North Carolina state seal button is rare to find as non-excavated and it will be an excellent addition to any Civil War button or general relic collection.
