North Carolina State Seal Coat Button

SOLD

Item: North Carolina State Seal Coat Button
Backmark:
"S A MYERS / RICHMOND VA." rmdc
Construction: Convex, two-piece.
Approximate size: 23 mm.
Condition: Fair, excavated, shank missing. The state seal on the front of this button is well defined and loaded with gilt. There is a break above the female figures of Liberty and Plenty resulting in the letters "CA" missing from "CAROLINA". Just below this break is a crack and, below that, is a small push to the center. There are a couple of hairline fractures in the rim. The rear is covered with gilt and, despite what the reference book mentions in the comments section below, the backmark on this example is mostly legible. There are no repairs. Considering the issues that this button has, it is still in remarkably solid condition.
Recovered: In the area of Quantico, VA.
Comments:
According to the button reference book "Uniform Buttons Of The United States 1776-1865" by Warren K. Tice, regarding the backmark of this button, "The legibility is often poor. Recent research suggests that Casimir Rouyer made these in his New Orleans shop." This button will be an excellent display piece or addition to any excavated Civil War button or general relic collection.
