North Carolina "Sunburst" Coat Button

SOLD

Item: North Carolina "Sunburst" Coat Button
Backmark
: Blank
Design: A seven pointed raised star or "sunburst" on a stippled field with border. The star's prime point is down, or in the six o'clock position. The raised letters "NC" are in the center on a lined field within a raised ring.
Construction: Low convex, one-piece.
Approximate size: 23 mm.
Condition: Very good, excavated, shank missing (see comments below). Very attractive dusty green patina. The raised "NC" in the lined center, surrounding rays, and stippled background are all strong. The body of the button has a gentle wave. The rear has remnants of a light layer of solder that once secured the shank. The button has no cracks or repairs.
Recovered: Unknown
Reference: Tice: NC242B1; Albert: NC 16
Comments: The majority of this classification of North Carolina sunburst buttons are recovered without their shanks. This is primarily due to its non-footed shank having been spot brazed or soldered to the button's rear resulting in a fragile design. This NC sunburst button will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War button or general relic collection.
