North Carolina "Sunburst" Coat Button - Silvered

SOLD

Item: North Carolina "Sunburst" Coat Button - Silvered
Backmark
: Blank
Design: A seven-pointed raised star or "sunburst" on a stippled field with border. The star's prime point is down, or in the six o'clock position. Raised letters "NC" are found in the center on a horizontally-lined background within a raised ring.
Construction: Low convex, one-piece.
Approximate size: 23 mm.
Condition: Very good, excavated, shank missing (see comments below). Very attractive dark green patina with ample silver wash. The raised "NC" in the lined center, surrounding rays, and stippled background are distinct. The rear has remnants of a light layer of solder that once secured the shank. The body of the button has no cracks, breaks, bends, or repairs.

An example can be found in the following button reference book:

  • "Uniform Buttons of the United States 1776-1865" by Warren K. Tice, page 411, item 8.

See the above page in the additional images.

Comments: The majority of this classification of North Carolina sunburst buttons are recovered without their shanks. This is primarily due to its non-footed shank having been spot brazed or soldered to the button's rear resulting in a fragile design. This NC sunburst button will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War button or general relic collection.
