Item: North Carolina Sunburst Button with Shank - High Quality
Backmark: Blank
Construction: Low convex, one-piece.
Approximate size: 22 mm.
Condition: Excellent, excavated, secure shank present. Brown patina with ample gilt on both front and rear. The button's front has a finely-stippled gilded field, with letters "NC" presented on a horizontally-lined background. The circular "spin" marks, mentioned in the description of this type "sunburst" button found on page 412 in "Uniform Buttons of the United States 1776-1865" by Warren K. Tice, are visible. These marks were a result of the buttons being shaped on a lathe by workers at the factory. No cracks, breaks, bends, or repairs.
Recovered: August 2, 1981, Quantico, VA area along the Potomac River.
Reference: Tice: NC233A1 Albert: NC 14
Comments: The button was acquired directly from the Virginia digger who maintained a journal of his days of detecting and subsequent relic recoveries for nearly a decade. The button is mentioned in the very first entry made August 2, 1981. Included in the additional is a scanned image of the digger (figure on left in image), with his hunting buddies and their detectors. Recovering a NC sunburst in most any condition typically represents a very nice find. Finding one in this condition, complete with shank and this much gilt, is a huge find. This complete, beautiful button will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War button or general relic collection.
