North Carolina Sunburst Coat Button with Shank - NC 14

SOLD

Item: North Carolina Sunburst Button with Shank - NC 14
Backmark: Blank
Design: Button front has a finely-stippled gilded field, with letters "NC" presented on a horizontally-lined background.
Construction: Low convex, one-piece.
Approximate size: 22 mm.
Condition: Excellent, excavated, secure shank present. Overall brown patina with ample underlying gilt on its front. The rear is covered with gilt and also shows circular "spin" marks created during the manufacturing process. These marks were a result of the buttons being shaped on a lathe by workers at the factory. No cracks, breaks, bends, or repairs.
Recovered: Albemarle County, VA on a large farm overlooking the James River.
Reference: Tice: NC233A1 Albert: NC 14
Comments:  This rarer style NC "sunburst" button was acquired directly from the Virginia digger who primarily hunted old home sites in Albemarle County and other surrounding areas. Recovering a NC sunburst in most any condition typically represents a very nice find. Finding one in this condition, complete with shank and this much gilt, is a huge find. This example will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War button or general relic collection.
