Item: Excavated "OVM" Ohio Volunteer Militia oval waist belt plate.
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with solder fill and stud type attachment hooks.
Condition: Good. Its brass front is complete with a dusty brown patina highlighting the raised letters "ÖVM". There is a small scrape in the patina on the right side of the letter "O" exposng a bit of the original shiny brass. While the rim shows some minor bending in few areas, I am unable to detect any cracks or breaks in the brass. There is a slight bend in the body as can be observed in the additional side view images. The rear has nearly all of its solder and is missing one of its belt attachment studs and the single belt attachment hook at the opposite end. This buckle has no repairs or major bends
Comments: These are rare plates to find and this example was acquired directly from the digger who recovered it from a creek bed. It will certainly be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
Recovered: Port Republic, VA
Approximate size: 54 x 85 mm.
