Federal Poncho / Cape Button Hook

This excavated Federal poncho hook/cape button is in excellent condition and was acquired directly from a Virginia relic hunter who recovered from the Spotsylvania Court House, VA area. These devices were patented by Abel Putnam in 1862 and designed to connect two grommets on a rubber blanket to be used as ponchos by the soldier in inclement weather. The face of the button has plenty of gilt and a small amount of clear coat in the shield area with no pushes, cracks, or breaks. The iron rear and its hook, is rusty and has been lightly clear coated so as to preserve it. Overall the device is intact and solid, but should still be handled gently. In most cases when recovered, the iron hook is missing, but not in this case! There are no repairs.

A similar example of a Federal poncho hook/cape button is pictured and described in "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War 1861-1865" by Stanley S. Phillips as item 35 on pages 66 & 67. These two reference book pages are included in the additional images.

This poncho hook/cape button offered in this listing will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War campsite or general relic collection.
