This excavated pattern 1853 Enfield rifle-musket lock and hammer was recovered from the Wilderness, VA area and is in good, solid condition. Its surface is smooth with minimal pitting. At some point in time it was lightly clear coated. A similar example of an excavated Enfield lock and hammer is pictured in the fourth printing of Stanley S. Phillip's book "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War" on page 175 as item #4. This relic will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War firearm, campsite, battlefield, or general relic collection.
