Curb Chain for Horse Bit

SOLD

This excavated brass curb chain for horse bit is in good condition and has very pleasing dusty brown-green patina. Curb chains are typically a flat linked chain that ran under the chin groove of a horse as part of the curb bit. The links of this curb bit are more rounded, and its overall length measurement is approximately 5-3/4 inches. There are no repairs, and its recovery location is unknown.

Examples of similar, but not exact, brass curb chains are found in the following relic reference books:

  • "Civil War Artifacts" by Howard Crouch on page 128, item 5 (bottom example).
  • "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War" by Stanley S. Phillips on page 77.

See scans of above pages in additional images.

If you have a bit that needs a chain, then this one will be a very nice addition. It will also be an excellent example to add to any excavated Civil War horse tack, campsite, or general relic collection.
