This pocket almanac for the year 1854 is in fragile relic condition. It contains both standard calendar information for that year as well as hand written notes, figures, and a diary that includes information beyond 1854. It contains information such as the "Eclipses of the Sun and Moon", "Moveable Feasts and Fasts for 1854", "Moon's Phases", and "Events and Holy-days" for each month. With the exception of multiple pages in its center there is penciled writing in both English and, what I believe to be German. The last 1/3 of the almanac appears to be the owner's diary. A previous owner of the almanac in 2010 described the diary portion as follows:
(the diary) "is mainly concerned with day to day lives (the writer was a very religious man). Moving to a camp near Mobile, AL they were also attached" (possibly misspelled "attacked"?) "by rebels. Includes various names of generals are mentioned but it seems all very superficial. As an example, on April 23rd, 1865 the news was recorded of President Lincoln's assassination. There was just this statement and nothing else. His death and the consequences were never mentioned again."
It is missing its cover and some pages. The almanac is loosely held together by twine and a couple of the pages, while present, are no longer attached. It should be handled with care.
This 1854 almanac will be an excellent project for anyone to translate the German to English to determine what is contained on these pages. It measures approximately 2-1/2 x 4 inches.
