Comments: According to "Uniform Buttons of the United States 1776-1865" by Warren K. Tice, regarding the Rhode Island state seal design:

"Since 1647, the seal and coat of arms of Rhode Island has consisted of an anchor with motto Hope. The anchor, used in dangerous storms to secure ships and crews, is symbolic of faith. The motto suggest placing trust in religion and state. Rhode Island employed the anchor device on buttons as early as the Revolution."

This fine Rhode Island state seal button will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War button or general relic collection.
