Sewing Thimble

SOLD

This sewing thimble was recovered from Mine Run, VA. It has a brown patina with tan soil lodged in its dimpled surface. The opening is very slightly out-of-round. It measures approximately 3/4 inch. in length and has a 9/16 inch. diameter at its opening. Since it is slightly out of round at its opening the diameter measurement varies.

Other examples of excavated thimbles are pictured in:

  • "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of the Civil War 1861-1865" by Stanley S. Phillips on page 128, items 2-5.
  • "Civil War Artifacts: A Guide for the Historian" by Howard R. Crouch on page 36, #5.

See above pages in additional images.

This soldier personal relic will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War camp item or general relic collection.
