Item: Three-piece Shaler bullet - base section only.
Condition: Very good. Grey-white patina with a dent on one side resulting in slightly out of round skirt.
Comments: This Shaler base is the bottom section to the three piece Shaler bullet which is by far one of the most interesting bullets from the Civil War. It was invented by Reuben Shaler and patented on August 12, 1862. After it was fired, the three sections would spread apart allowing for more impact points on its designated target. Should you have the top two sections, this base section will be an excellent addition to complete your Shaler bullet. Or, if you are starting to assemble the three pieces to form a complete example, then this will be an excellent start.
Recovered: Hanover County, VA.
Approximate size: .53 inch diameter x .56 inch length.
