Shovel Head

SOLD

This shovel head measures approximately 16 inches in overall length and weighs 2.6 pounds. The blade measures approximately 7-3/8 x 11-1/2 inches. It was recovered from a Civil War site in the Williamsburg, VA area. Constructed of iron, both front and rear have holes where the handle post meets the blade and the blade itself has edge wear. The upper and lower handle posts are partially present. Remarkably, the shovel head is very solid, even in the areas of wear.

Reference:  Similar shovel heads are pictured in the following Civil War excavated relic reference books:

  • "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War" by Stanley S. Phillip, page 155, item 3.
  • "Civil War Artifacts" by Howard Crouch, page 61, item 1.

See above pages in the additional images.

This relic will be an excellent display piece for any excavated Civil War campsite or general relic collection.
