Item: South Carolina Militia "Northern Volunteers" Coat Button - Rare
Backmark: "SCOVILLS / WATERBURY" dm
Construction: Convex, two-piece.
Approximate size: 20 mm.
Condition: Very good, excavated, shank missing. The button shows wear with moderate ground action. Only a few letters of the backmark are visible. There are no pushes, cracks, or repairs.
Recovered: Unknown

Comments: According to "Uniform Buttons of the United States 1776-1865" by Warren K. Tice on page 457, regarding this particular button:
"Scovills made this extremely rare button during the 1840s." Depicted on the front of the button is "A flying eagle on a plain field grasps lined shield in the beak. The initials "S. C. M." are on a swallow-tailed ribbon below. The inscription "Northern Volunteers" lies along the bottom."
