Item: South Carolina State Seal Coat Button - "Opibusque" Misspelled
Backmark: ". HORSTMANN & ALLIEN / N Y"
Construction: Convex, two-piece.
Approximate size: 23 mm.
Condition: Excellent, excavated, secure shank present. There is a moderate push to the center front with ample gilt covering a chocolate brown patina. There are no cracks, breaks, or repairs.
Recovered: Brandy Station, VA
Reference: Tice: SC258A1 Albert: SC 14
Comments: This is the South Carolina button where the Latin word "OPIBUSQUE" in its motto is misspelled "OPIRUSQUE". It is a fine example that will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War button or general relic collection.
