Item: Excavated State of New York oval waist belt buckle.
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with raised letters "SNY". Rear with solder fill and stud ("puppy paw") type belt attachment hooks.
Condition: Very good, excavated. The brass face of this SNY buckle has a very pleasing even chocolate brown patina. There are dents from period use but none pierce the brass. The body of the plate also has bending from period use but nothing major. The rim has minor bending and a small nick at the "Y" end. The rear has a complete complement of solder and all three belt attachment hooks are present. There are no cracks or repairs.
Recovered: Charlestown, WV area.
Approximate size: 56 x 87 mm.
Comments: The beautiful front of this buckle as well as the "been there, done that" appearance is what appeals to me most and it will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
