These excavated thin brass tokens, once linked together likely as a watch chain, were recovered together in the area of Petersburg, VA along with other Civil War period military relics. There are a total of six tokens which have aged into a very pleasing dusty green patina. On one side is the number "1" surrounded by a wreath of leaves and on the other what appears to be Liberty surrounded by either 13 or 14 stars. A similar example can be found pictured in the fourth printing of Stanley S. Phillip's book "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War" on page 122 as item #1. These watch chain tokens will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War campsite or general relic collection.
