Item: Unfired US 3 Inch Type II Hotchkiss Case-Shot
Construction: Cast iron with lead sabot and brass time fuse adaptor.
Approximate size: Weight: 9.2 pounds. Diameter: 2.94 inches. Length: 7-1/4 inches.
Condition: Very good, excavated, un-fired, deactivated. The iron is still in its raw state, and is stable with moderate pitting. Its brass time fuse adaptor and lead sabot are present and there are no repairs.
Recovered: McDowell, VA
Comments: It is rare to see Civil War relics recovered from this area available for purchase. According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", unfired Hotchkiss artillery shells are typically longer in length than fired examples due to compression. This 3-inch Hotchkiss case-shot will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
