Item: US Belt Buckle - Stud Hooks
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with raised letters "US". Rear with solder fill and stud (aka "puppy paw") type attachment hooks.
Condition: Very good, excavated. Its brass front has a thin layer of encrusted yellow soil over an olive-green patina. The rim is intact and in good shape with only very mild bends. The rear has a near complete complement of solder with minimal surface flaking primarily in areas of the rim. All three belt attachment hooks are present. Printed on the rear in one area near the rim in old blue ink is "MALVERN HILL / 1967" representing the location and date of recovery. At another area near the rim, though difficult to see, is also printed in blue ink "BY E V SMITH". The buckle has no repairs.
Recovered: Malvern Hill, VA area.
Approximate size: 54 x 85 mm.
Comments: This excavated US belt buckle was acquired directly from the family of E. V. Smith. Mr. Smith, a lifelong Virginia relic hunter, thoughtfully recorded the buckle’s date and location of recovery. It will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War buckle, plate, or general relic collection.
