Item: US Belt Buckle - Leather and Variant Hooks
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with raised long tall letters "US". Rear with solder fill and variant straight type belt attachment hooks.
Condition: Excellent, excavated. Its brass front has a very pleasing appearance with a thin layer of yellowed soil over a dark brown patina. The rim is in good shape. The rear has a complete complement of solder and all three belt attachment hooks in place. Lodged under the single hook is a solid piece of the original leather waist belt. The plate has no cracks, breaks, bends, or repairs.
Recovered: Federal campsite in Stafford County, VA.
Approximate size: 58 x 88 mm.
Reference: An example of another large size US buckle with the same "US" font, but with arrow hooks instead, is pictured in the following reference book:
See the above page in the additional images.
Comments: This buckle is a rare variant of the US Regulation 1839 waist belt plate due to its unusual straight hooks with rounded tips found at one end. At first glance they appeared to be a field redesign of the "arrow style" hook regularly found on US buckles. However, upon further inspection and comparison of this buckle with other arrow style hooks, I have determined that it was manufactured with this straight hook design. It will be an excellent and unique addition to any Civil War buckle, plate, or general relic collection.
