Item: A Maker Marked US Belt Buckle - "E. GAYLORD" & Carved Letter "H"
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass, with raised stamped letters "US", rear with solder fill and stud type attachment hooks.
Condition: Very good, excavated. Its brass front has an even chocolate brown patina. The rim is complete with no issues. The rim is in good condition with the exception of a period strike with bend at the 4 o’clock position. The patina of the brass in this area is exactly the same as the rest of the brass face. The rear has a near complete complement of solder. The manufacturer's stamp of "E. GAYLORD" is stamped into the rear, along with a carved letter "H". All three belt attachment hooks remain in place. The plate has an overall nicely rounded body curve with no cracks, breaks or repairs.
Recovered: Unknown
Approximate size: 53 x 83 mm.
Comments: Most plates recovered do not have a manufacturer's stamp, making those that are recovered, a rarity and a great day for any relic hunter. The letter “H” was likely carved by the soldier to mark the buckle with belt as his. This belt plate will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
