US Bridle Bit Boss

Item: US Cavalry Bridle Bit Boss
Construction:
Cast brass with raised letters "US" on a stippled background.
Use: Device attached to both sides of a US regulation Cavalry bit. 
Condition: 
Fair, excavated. Front is partially soil coated on a green-brown patina. A portion of the rim is missing and the body is slightly concaved. Both attachment tabs present. No repairs.
Approximate size: 1-3/16 x 2-1/16 inches.
Recovered: Harrison's Landing, VA.

Comments: This bit boss was acquired directly from the late Gene Cooley many years ago. Gene was local Virginia legend who relic hunted primarily east of Richmond since the 1960s. Click on his name above to read more about Gene and his story. This rosette will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War cavalry or general relic collection.

Additional information: Harrison's Landing, was the site of General George McClellan's encampment during the summer of 1862 after the battle of Malvern Hill, the last of the Seven Days Battles
