Construction: Stamped sheet brass with raised letters "US", rear solder fill, four brass attachment wires.
Use: Decorative device used on harness.
Condition: Very good, excavated, solid. Very pleasing chocolate brown patina. Slightly concaved body. Full compliment of rear solder with all four attachment wires present. Small nicks in the rim edge but otherwise no cracks or repairs.
Recovered: Cumberland Church area, Cumberland County, VA.
Approximate size: 1-3/8 inches.
Reference: Similar US rosettes are found in the following Civil War relic reference books:
The above pages are included in the additional images.
Comments: This particular US issue solder filled rosette is a slightly larger size than what is typically recovered. It was acquired directly from the local Virginia digger. Interestingly, the engagement at Cumberland Church is considered to be the last battle victory for the Confederacy prior to Lee's surrender at Appomattox. This will be an excellent addition to any Civil War cavalry, horse tack, or general relic collection.
