US Cartridge Box Plate

SOLD

Item: US Cartridge Box Plate
Use: Cartridge box plates were displayed on the outer flap of the soldier's cartridge box. Not only ornamental but more practically used as a weight to keep the cartridge box flap closed to prevent cartridge loss. See the additional images in this listing for an image showing its use.
Construction:
Stamped thin sheet brass with solder fill and iron attachment loops.
Condition:
Good, excavated, iron attachment loops present. Its brass front, with its thin raised letters "US" nicely highlighted by a border at the rim of yellow soil residue, has a chocolate brown patina. The body of the plate has a slight inward bend which is likely the result of period use. The rim is complete with a bend at the "S" end which does not appear to be digger damage as the patina in that area is consistent with the undamaged remainder of the brass front. The rear solder is solid and, with the exception of very minor surface flaking, nearly complete. Both attachment loops are present, complete and nearly straight up. Printed in blue ink on the rear is "BETHESDA CHURCH  5/14/68  FOUND BY E V SMITH". The plate has no cracks, breaks, or repairs.
Recovered:
May 14, 1968 Bethesda Church, VA.
Approximate size:
 54 x 86 mm.
Comments:
This excavated US cartridge box plate was acquired directly from the family of E. V. Smith. Mr. Smith, a lifelong Virginia relic hunter, thoughtfully recorded the plate’s date and location of recovery. It will be an excellent addition to any excavated plate or general relic collection.
