US Cartridge Box Plate

Item: US Cartridge Box Plate
Use: Cartridge box plates were displayed on the outer flap of the soldier's cartridge box. Not only ornamental but more practically used as a weight to keep the cartridge box flap closed to prevent cartridge loss. See the additional images in this listing for an image showing its use.
Construction:
Stamped thin sheet brass with solder fill and iron attachment loops.
Condition:
Fair, excavated. Its brass front, with raised letters "US", has a mixed dirty green-brown patina. A portion of the left side of the plate is missing and there are cracks, breaks and bends in the remaining portion. The rear of the remaining front retains nearly all of its original solder, and both attachment loops are missing. This plate has not been repaired.
Recovered:
 Charlestown, WV area.
Approximate size:
59 x 73 mm. (measurements vary due to condition)
Comments:
This US cartridge box plate was acquired directly from the digger and, if you like that war torn appearance, then this one is for you. It will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War buckle, plate, or general relic collection.
