US Cartridge Box Plate - Freemasons Symbol - High Quality

SOLD

Item: US Cartridge Box Plate - Freemasons Symbol - High Quality
Use: Cartridge box plates were displayed on the outer flap of the soldier's cartridge box. Not only ornamental but more practically used as a weight to keep the cartridge box flap closed to prevent cartridge loss. See the additional images in this listing for an image showing its use.
Construction:
Stamped thin sheet brass with solder fill and iron attachment loops.
Condition:
Excellent, excavated, iron attachment loops present. Its brass front, with its raised letters "US", has a pleasing rich brown patina. Lightly carved in the center, between the letters "U" and "S", is what is believed to be the symbol of the Freemason's fraternal organization. The rim is complete with no issues. The rear has a near complete complement of solder with only very light surface flaking at the "S" end. Both attachment loops are present, solid and complete. Printed on old label epoxied to the rear is "WILD / NOT / 12/3/60" its recovery location and date. The plate has no cracks, breaks, repairs or major bends.
Recovered:
Wilderness, VA area, December 3, 1960. (I am uncertain of the meaning of "NOT", possibly a specific area within Wilderness or possibly digger initials?)
Approximate size:
 54 x 85 mm.
Comments:
Freemasons on both sides of the conflict were known to provide aid and support to fellow Masons, even when they were enemy soldiers, often offering assistance like food, medicine, and better treatment in prisoner of war camps, based on the shared bonds of their Masonic brotherhood. This cartridge box plate is a superb example and will be an excellent addition to any excavated plate or general relic collection.
