Item: US Cavalry Bridle Bit Boss
Construction: Cast brass with raised letters "US" on a swirled stippled background with lined tabs.
Use: Insignia device attached to both sides of a US regulation Cavalry bit. An example of its use is included in the additional images.
Condition: Good, excavated. Pleasing overall dusty green patina. There is an inward bend in the body of the device along with round indentions about the size of buckshot that protrude to the rear. Both lined attachment tabs are present. No cracks, breaks, or repairs.
Approximate size: 1-1/4 x 2-1/8 inches.
Recovered: Charles City County, VA.

Comments: This bit boss was acquired directly from the digger and it will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War cavalry or general relic collection.
Additional information: Charles City County includes Harrison's Landing on the James River which was the site of General George McClellan's encampment during the summer of 1862 after the battle of Malvern Hill, the last of the Seven Days Battles.
