Item: US Cavalry Bridle Bit Boss
Construction:
Cast brass with raised letters "US" on (what appears to be) a swirled stippled background with lined tabs.
Use: Insignia device attached to both sides of a US regulation Cavalry bit. An example of its use is included in the additional images.
Condition: 
Good, excavated, uncleaned. Green-brown patina. Soil still covers most of the boss and is found still lodged in recesses of the front and attachment tab holes. No cracks, breaks, or repairs.
Approximate size: 1-1/4 x 2-1/8 inches.
Recovered: Charlestown, WV area.
