Item: US Model 1855 Socket Bayonet - .58 Caliber
Construction: Iron
Condition: Very good, excavated, solid shape. Overall moderate surface pitting. It appears to have been treated with electrolysis to stabilize the iron. Locking ring with screw, are present and fixed in place. There is a gentle upward bend in the blade approximately seven inches from the tip. The edge of the blade has nicks both small and large. Printed on the face flute, in what is believed to be "white-out", is "NORTH ANNA 7-10-94". There are no repairs.
Recovered: July 10, 1994 North Anna, VA area.
Approximate size: 21 inches overall length; 3 inch socket length.
Comments: This solid bayonet was also in use with the US model 1861 & 1863 rifle/musket. It was acquired directly from the family of the local Virginia digger and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War bayonet, weapon, or general relic collection.
