USA Intertwined Bridle Rosette

SOLD

This excavated rosette, with the raised and intertwined letters "USA", is in very good condition. It was acquired directly from the digger who recovered it in Charles City County, VA. The device measures approximately 2 inches in diameter and its brass face has a dusty chocolate brown patina. There is a dent in the rim at the 1 o'clock position with no bright brass showing. The rear is solder filled which now has a pebbled surface. The attachment bar is missing. The device has no cracks, breaks, bends, or repairs. It will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War relic collection.

Examples of similar rosettes with intertwined letters "USA" are found in the following relic reference books:

  • "Civil War Artifacts" by Howard Crouch on page 133, item 1. (Crouch writes that there is some indication that rosettes of this type saw artillery usage)
  • "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War" by Stanley S. Phillips on page 86, Item 8.

See scans of above pages in additional images.
