This veteran badge is a rare find even if only half the badge. Constructed of stamped brass which was silvered, these were private purchase items sold by sutlers to the soldiers. Its original form was an oval shape, now with the left side missing. The rear shows the remnants of the attachment device for the pin. It measures approximately 23 mm in height and was recovered from Petersburg, VA. An example can be found in "Excavated Artifacts From Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War 1861-1865" by Stanley S. Phillips on page 127 as item #7 and also in his 1980 "Supplement I" edition on page 156, plate 121, item 2. This pin will be an excellent addition to any Civil War veteran or general relic collection.
